Removing personal items from your home is equally as important as decluttering and cleaning. The goal of staging is to help potential buyers envision themselves living in the home from the moment they walk in the front door. We refer to staging as “the art of depersonalization”. That can be very hard to do when you’re surrounded by someone else’s family photos, kids’ art projects or collectibles — while they may be very special to one person, they won’t have any special meaning to buyers. Leaving personal items in a home actually makes buyers uncomfortable and less likely to look around.
Overwhelmed by the thought of packing away all the items that have made your house into a home over the years?? A great way to get over this emotional hurdle is to focus on the benefits of pre-packing. The more you pack now, the less you have to pack later! Packing always takes longer than you think it will, so the more prepared you can be for the big move, the better. It’ll also be less likely that something valuable to you gets damaged with groups of people walking through your home.
Following is a list of items we recommend removing prior to photos being taken:
- Photos of family / friends
- Taste-specific artwork
- Kids items (i.e. toys, art projects, etc.)
- Sports team paraphernalia
- Political items
- Religious items
- Bathroom items (towels, robes, etc.)
We know this can be a daunting task, but we encourage you to look on the bright side. You are creating a blank canvas for buyers and positioning your home at the top of the market by doing so.
